Startups Are Not Just Code: Why We Need Sales, Law, and Marketing

The Code Myth
We live in a bubble. We think that "The Code" is the asset. We celebrate the hacker who pulls an all-nighter. We obsess over the cleanliness of our React components.
But here is a cold, hard truth: Code without Distribution is worthless.
I have seen brilliant codebases—clean, tested, scalable—rot in private GitHub repositories because the founder couldn't pick up the phone and sell it.
I have seen mediocre codebases—spaghetti code, buggy, slow—make millions of dollars because the founder was a relentless salesman.
The Code is not the business. The Code is just the Production Facility of the business.
The Triad of Success
You need three engines to make a startup fly. If you only have one, you crash.
1. The Builder (Product) Yes, you need to build something that solves a problem. But it doesn't need to be perfect. It just needs to work *enough* to deliver value. (See our 'MVP in 30 Days' guide). - **Traits:** Curiosity, Logic, Craft.
2. The Seller (Distribution) You need to get it in people's hands. - **Marketing:** Getting people to know you exist (Broad). - **Sales:** Getting people to trust you enough to give you money (Deep). This is not "dirty work". This is the lifeblood of the business. If you cannot sell, you cannot eat.
3. The Operator (Governance) You need to keep the machine running without breaking the law or running out of cash. - **Legal:** Contracts, IP protection, Employment law. - **Finance:** Cash flow management, Taxes, Unit Economics.
Most technical founders ignore #3 until the tax authority knocks on their door or a co-founder dispute destroys the company.
The Legal Minefield
Why do we need Lawyers? Because contracts are just code that runs on the Judicial System.
If you have a bug in your Python code, the server crashes. You fix it. If you have a bug in your Shareholders' Agreement, you lose 50% of your company 5 years from now. You cannot "fix" it later.
At Orb21, we treat Legal Documents with the same rigor as Pull Requests. We review them. We test edge cases. ("What happens if I get hit by a bus? ")
Redefining 'Contributor'
At Orb21, 'Contributor' does not just mean 'Software Engineer'.
- If you are a **Lawyer** who can write a watertight SaaS agreement that saves us from a lawsuit, you are a critical contributor.
- If you are a **Sales Rep** who can close 10 pilot customers with cold calls, you are a critical contributor.
- If you are a **Content Creator** who can drive 10,000 views to our landing page, you are a critical contributor.
The Value Equation
We track value impact, not lines of code. If a salesperson brings in $10k recurring revenue, that is "worth" more to the survival of the company than a feature that took 2 weeks to build but nobody uses.
Join us. No matter your skill. If you can move the needle, you belong here. We are building a nation, not just an app.
